OAK PARK-RIVER FOREST

Last-second confusion does in Huskies at Glenbrook Cup

By Dan Santaromita

Players are always told to play until the final horn.

But what do you do when there are two horns to go off three seconds apart?

Oak Park-River Forest's final match at the Glenbrook Cup had one of the more bizarre endings you will see.

The Huskies lost 2-1 to Kenosha Bradford on a goal with three seconds left when some of the players stopped playing after the other field's final horn went off.

Bradford had the ball in the box and scored during the confusion. Three seconds later, the horn for their field went off.

"The goal at the end of the game, it's just a shame," OPRF coach Paul Wright said.

"You got two fields next to each other and a siren goes off and you stop and you realize it’s not on your field, it's another field."

OPRF (7-5-1) took a 1-0 lead in the match in the 22nd minute when junior Emily Gullo broke through the defense and finished with a low shot.

Bradford equalized in the 36th minute of the 60-minute game.

The Wisconsin squad almost scored another in the 54th minute, but Huskie goalie Katie Oldach (4 saves) made a nice diving save low to her right.

Bradford's late winner ruined what was an otherwise good day in Northbrook for the Huskies.

Earlier, they defeated Lake Forest Academy 3-0 behind goals from Emily and Victoria Gullo and Jackie Huntley.

"Emily Gullo is great," Wright said. "Her and her twin sister Tori in the middle work really well together. Jessica Luttrell, too."

OPRF dominated Lake Forest Academy and Oldach only had to make two saves for the shutout.

"We came out this morning and we had a great game," Wright said. "We had Jackie Huntley put in a nice goal on a set piece. We came to play.

"We were moving. We were aggressive taking chances. (The Bradford) game we scored real quick, but we were tired."

With two matches within just a few hours of each other, Wright had to keep players fresh by making frequent substitutions.

At one point in the Lake Forest Academy match, Wright subbed in eight players at once.

"We got some growth," he said. "We had some kids get in different positions.

"It was well worth being here just trying to look at some different looks and giving some kids some different chances.

"That's what's nice about a tournament like this is that you can do a lot of that."

The Huskies finished 1-2 in the tournament, which was third in their group behind Crystal Lake South and Bradford, who both went 2-0-1.
